26th Nov - Gnome Shell by Dobbie03 26th Nov - Gnome Shell by Dobbie03
I thought I should really bite the bullet and move to Gnome Shell since it is inevitable that Gnome2 is no longer being developed and won't be available for much longer.

Mind you I just ordered 8gbs of RAM from my Mac so I will be using that more often soon.

Ask if you require anything

The theme is Zukitwo which you can find here at DA, as far as the wallpaper goes I have uploaded it here: [link]

No worries about asking to much, I am more than happy to help.

What's that conky? And how did you get it to work...every time I enter "activities" mode conky disappears from the desktop.

It's a modified version of this [link]

I jut changed own_window_type from override to "conky". Seemed to do the trick for me.

While using gnome-shell for several days when 11.10 came out, after many arguments with it and several fist fights, I came to the inevitable conclusion that gnome-shell works very differently from gnome2 so if you want some peace of mind you'd be better off forgetting completely how your desktop was and start from scratch with it, without trying to achieve something specific. That way you'll get the most out of it. You can't get it to work and look like gnome2 no matter how hard you try, and I don't think it'd be the best of choices anyway.

So, yeah. Nice work with the conky again btw, although I preferred it as it was in your previous screenshots with covergloobus as well.

Good advice Koleo. Lets see how it goes.

Thanks I prefer the covergloobus like that too but my conky keeps covering it and I can't seem to figure out why.

It's ok, I do prefer Gnome 2 though. Conky is not playing nice either. What do you think of it Marc?

Well I do like it, once I added the gnome extensions PPA in 11.10 it did everything I needed it to do. Of course I am more familiar with Gnome2 but I figure better get to know Gnome-Shell as it will be the de-facto DE soon anyways. Sorry if that was a long response. :-)

Yeah the extensions are ok, I miss the global menu as it was in Gnome 2.

Ya there are things I miss from Gnome2 for sure, I wish someone would have forked Gnome2 but I guess no one wants to do it. Is a shame but what can we do.

Well, there is a fork called Mate, but it's nowhere near finished yet as I understand.

You are right, MATE is very early in the Dev, so we will see how it turns out. :-)
